Korean Folk dancers by MacLaurinI

Ilsoo Kyung MacLaurin, Korean Folk Dancers, Paper

I am a Korean who immigrated to Canada in 1967 as a Registered Nurse. After retiring from a 30 year nursing career, I studied fine arts and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University
of British Columbia in 2006. I am a member of the South Delta Artist’s Guild, the Delta Arts Council, the North Vancouver Artist’s Council and the Surrey Artist’s Council. This particular installation depicts an element of my past. As with many of my works, it is grounded within the natural world and visual appeal is at its roots. I pay special attention to detail, structure and form; however behind this scene can there be more meaning? These dancers stir and spread the awareness of a past, which in my hopes this installation will allow the viewer a glimpse of the challenges that we must face together as a society. In my works I am addressing the question of cultural identity and, in the process; a new synthesis is emerging in my own individual practice of creating art.

Artist – Wong, Ping Kwong

Dad, we'll be empty nest by Ping Wong

He studied the ‘Adult Education Instructor Training Program’ at the Vancouver School Board, B.C., in 1995. He has participated many exhibitions in Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan, United States, and mainly in B.C., Canada since 1995. He was the recipient of the Hong Kong Urban Council Fine Arts Award (Ceramics) in 1987. Now he is a studio potter and ceramic art instructor.

A special purpose of this year’s art exhibition is to put the spotlight on local young artists and established masters who are either home-grown first-generation Asian-Canadians or new immigrants. In order to nurture and support young local talents, Generation One Art Exhibition together with UBC Art History and Visual Art Department (AHVA) will co-present this week-long exhibition at the Asian Centre Auditorium from May 20 to 27, 2013.

This exhibition of paintings and calligraphy by local young artists from a Pan-Asian cultural spectrum – from the Middle East to the Far East.  This exhibition produced by VAHMS will also feature established masters’ works to stimulate inter-generational interaction and learning. I was unexpectedly a passionate artist since the age of two, with
the support of my artist family I was able to develop a sense of
style and commitment to art. So instead of becoming a doctor,
lawyer, or account manager, I chose art. I came from Beijing,
then I moved to New York, now I’m in Vancouver, I am always
exploring and learning. I became a woman with many titles;
I am an exhibition coordinator, a student, an illustrator, a coworker,
a friend, a confidante, a wife, a daughter, and a mother.
Yet, over the years, I remind myself that I am most importantly
an artist, and that no matter what happens in life, there will
always be an uninterrupted flow of art making and appreciating.
My work is an extension of myself and the reason that I am.

Miki Watanabe  is an artist investigating questions of spiritually, sexuality, psychology and the relationship between technology and culture. These  issues are investigated in a variety of mediums in an emotionally charged visual language, often pertaining to a cyber-feminist discourse. Her body of work is an exploration of the point in time where cultures collides, a meeting between the digital and the ethereal, the spiritual and the synthetic. These dichotomies convey a diverse array of intimacies unique to a visionary.
